Gregory S Weinstein, MD, is the Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Deportment of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is Director of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery and Co-Director of the Center for Head and Neck Cancer. Dr. Weinstein completed his residency at the University of Iowa and completed his American Head and Neck Society Advanced Training Head and Neck Surgical Fellowship at the University of California, Davis.
He was Principal investigator of the world first IRB approved human clinical trial for robotic surgery in the field of Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Weinstein has also been involved in establishing the first formal training program in TORS. Dr. Weinstein and O'Matey established the first format training program in TORS and have trained over 150 physician/researchers from a number of centers around the United States in the TORS techniques as wet as visiting surgeons from numerous other countries.
At the request of the FDA, Drs Weinstein and O'Malley also initiated a retrospective human clinical trials at select US institutions (notably Mayo Clinic, University of Alabama, and MD Anderson) to show that TORS can be translated to other institutions and surgeons. Dr Weinstein is one of five founding members of The Society of Robotic Surgery and the first President of that society. This multispecialty society with more than 400 members was founded on the fundamental principles of education and collaboration as a means to tackle the complex issues of robotic surgery Bert W O'Malley, JR.
MD, is the Gabriel Tucker Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is Co-Director of the Center for Head and Neck Cancer and Co-Director of the Center for Cranial Bose Surgery, with joint appointments in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology. Dr O'Matey received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern and completed a residency in Otolaryngology D Head areal Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. O'Malley completed a fellowship in head and neck oncology and cranial base surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and subsequently began his academic faculty career at the Johns Hopkins University in 1995. Prior to coming to the University of Pennsylvania, he served as Chairman of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Maryland. Dr. O'Malley co-founded the first human robotics head and neck and skull base program in the world and is co-principal investigator of the first IRB-approved human clinical trial for robotic surgery in otolaryngology.
He is actively developing novel robotic surgical procedures (TORS) arel instrumentation to advance the use of this technology in all aspects of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery He and his co-author, Dr. Weinstein, were instrumental in the achievement of US FDA approval in December, 2009 for TORS (Trans Oral Robotic Surgery).
