This is a further volume in a series of companions to major philosophers. Each volume contains specially commissioned essays by an international team of scholars together with a substantial bibliography, and will serve as a reference work for students and nonspecialists. One aim of the series is to dispel the intimidation that readers may feel when faced with the work of a difficult and challenging thinker.
Aristotle is one of the greatest thinkers in the Western tradition, but also one of the most difficult. The contributors to this volume do not attempt to disguise the nature of that difficulty, but at the same time they offer a clear exposition of the central philosophical concerns in his work. Approaches and methods vary, and the volume editor has imposed no single interpretation and has allowed legitimate difference of interpretation to stand.
An introductory chapter provides an account of Aristotle's life and then guides the reader through the complex subject of what Aristotle actually wrote as a basis for characterizing his philosophical development. Subsequent chapters cover Aristotle's writings on logic, metaphysics, science, psychology, ethics, politics, rhetoric, and poetics. It is a basic assumption of the companion that its readers will not know Greek.
New readers and nonspecialists will find this the most accessible and comprehensive guide to Aristotle currently available. Advanced students and nonspecialists will find a conspectus of recent developments in the interpretation of Aristotle.
