The purpose of this book is to provide a thorough and self-contained introduction to the production and properties of synchrotron radiation. This form of radiation, produced using high-energy electron storage rings, has become a research tool of wide application. Originally used by physicists to study the structures of solids it is now used by a wide community including chemists, engineers, geologists, semiconductor engineers, and biologists and medics to study surfaces, bulk materials, crystals, and biological specimens like viruses. It is also used for the spectroscopic analysis of solids, liquids, and gases and as the illumination source for special biological and medical imaging techniques. The interdisciplinary groups of scientists using synchrotron radiation are the target audience for this book. The author brings together material from a wide ran-c of scattered sources and prescrits it for this group of synchrotron radiation users. Beginning with the foundations of electromagnetic theory he explains the production of synchrotron radiation using storage ring dipole magnets. He also deals with the production of radiation using insertion device sources.
