A large number of works by the Italian musician Giovanni Battista Cirri (1724-1808) from Forlì were printed during his lifetime. The busy cello virtuoso composed of course particularly for 'his' instrument, both concertos and sonatas, but also a number of chamber music pieces in other instrumentations, apart from occasional works for orchestra or for sacred occasions. The Sonata in G major published here is perfectly suitable for beginner's lessons, being a catchy, nice-sounding and rewarding piece for young cellists which is fun to play (and to listen to). The accompanying bass part was deliberately arranged as an easy piano part so that it can also be played by pupils. Instrumentation : cello and basso continuo
