À propos de l'auteur

Jane Austen

Biographie de Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in the village of Steventon, in Hampshire. Jane was the seventh child (out of eight) of a clergyman. She never married. In 1801 the family moved to Bath. In 1802 a childhood friend asked her to marry him - she accepted him and then withdrew her acceptance the very next day. Jane's brother Henry helped her negotiate with a publisher and her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, appeared in 1811.
Three other novels were published (all anonymously) in her lifetime : Pride and Prejudices (1813), which she described as her "own darling child", Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). In 1816 she started feeling unwell and later travelled to Winchester to receive medical treatment - the precise nature of her illness is still debated. She died in Winchester on 18 July 1817. Two more novels, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, were released (december 1817) posthumously and' were the first to identify her as the true author.
