This series of short texts provides accessible accounts of a range of essential topic in chemistry and chemical engineering. Written with the needs of the student in mind, the Oxford Chemistry Primers offer just the right level of detail for undergraduate study, and will be invaluable as a source of material commonly presented in lecture courses yet not adequately covered in existing texts. All the basic principles and facts; in a particular area are presented in a clear and straightforward style, to produce concise yet comprehensive accounts of topics covered in both core and specialist courses. Periodicity and the s- and block elements is a revised and up-dated version of 'Periodicity and the block elements (Oxford Chemistry Primer 16). It provides an overview of the comparative chemistry of the s-block and p-block elements-the main group elements-and the compounds they form. The author deliberately adopts a non-mathematical approach and indicates how the various trends in chemical properties can be rationalized, providing simple 'rules of thumb' to, help the student understand and appreciate these trends, The first chapter examines atomic structure and explains why the periodic table has the form it does. The next two chapters address properties of the elements themselves-e.g. ionization energy and electronegativity-and presents the trends in these properties. Chapter four examines trends in important general features associated with compounds, e.g. oxidation states, bond energies, and the physical nature of compounds. Chapter five explores the properties of halides, oxides, and hydrides, and the factors which determine why these compounds have the properties they do. The final chapters explore acids and bases and aspects of structure, and a selected bibliography is provided to assist in further reading.
