This is the third title in the Oxford Chemistry Masters series. These books are designed to provide clear and concise accounts of important topics both established and emergent that may be encountered by chemistry students as they progress from the senior undergraduate stage through postgraduate study to leadership in research. These Masters assume little prior knowledge, other than the foundations provided by an undergraduate degree in chemistry, and lead the reader through to an appreciation of the state of the art in the topic whilst providing an entrée to the original literature in the field. Carbohydrates have attracted a great deal of research interest in recent years from both synthetic chemists and glycobiologists. As a result they are now associated with a plethora of important biological processes and have been implicated in the onset and progress of many lethal diseases. They have therefore been identified as novel targets of therapeutic importance. Oligosaccharides: Their synthesis and biological roles is aimed at synthetic and medicinal chemists. It introduces both undergraduates and research students to the chemistry and biology of carbohydrates. The book investigates methods for synthesizing carbohydrates in a systematic and logical manner, and provides real examples from the literature to exemplify the procedures introduced. Both traditional and modern methods for synthesizing carbohydrates, including enzymatic and solid-phase techniques, are discussed.
    • Biological roles of oligosaccharides
    • Synthesis of carbohydrate acceptors
    • Synthesis of carbohydrate donors
    • Assembly of oligosaccharides
    • Literature examples of oligosaccharides synthesis
    • Alternative strategies for synthesising oligosaccharides
