Davis (1943-2018) était professeur émérite à l'université d'Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), auteur ou coordinateur d'une trentaine d'ouvrages, co-fondateur des séries Cross-Cultures et Matatu chez Rodopi-Brill et coordinateur avec Ganesh Devi de séries sur l'Inde, président de EACLALS (European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies) 2002-2005, 2005-2008, 2011-2014, et président international de ACLALS (Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studios) 2008-2011.
Grand spécialiste de la littérature d'Afrique du Sud et d'autres pays du Commonwealth.
