Biographie de Bram Stoker
Abraham ("Bram") Stoker was born in 1847 in Clontarf, Ireland. A sickly child, Bram spent much of his early years bedridden at home where his mother, who was a charity worker and a writer, told him scary stories which intrigued him and started to shape his imagination. In 1864 Stoker attended Trinity College at the University of Dublin where he excelled in athletics as well as academics. He then worked for ten years in the Irish Civil Service, writing theatre criticism for The Dublin Mail and short stories in the evenings.
His laudatory reviews of Henry Irving's performances led him to meet the actor. The two became friends, and later Stoker was appointed Irving's manager. In 1875, Stoker published his first novel, The Primrose Path. While managing the successful Lyceum Theatre, he continued to write and in 1897 he published his masterpiece, Dracula. The book was favourably received after its release but reached its peak popularity well after Stoker's death.
Stoker wrote a total of 12 novels in his lifetime. Dracula is generally regarded as the culmination of the Gothic vampire story. Stoker died in London in 1912 and his widow had the short story collection "Dracula's Guest and other Weird Stories" published posthumously in 1914.
