Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) created landscapes whose vast skies and distant horizons make palpable the endlessness of space and time. With an exceptionally subtle painterly approach, he composed images of longing that remain a source of fascination even today. Now regarded as Germany's most important Romantic painter, Friedrich was largely forgotten following his death. Only in the early twentieth century was he rediscovered thanks to the legendary German Centenary Exhibition at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, when he was celebrated as a painter of light and atmosphere as well as a forerunner of modernism. This exhibition catalogue offers an overview of Friedrich's life and work, poised between the precise study of nature and the Romantic imagination. The rediscovery of Friedrich, his landscapes of coastlines and mountains, his picture pairs, and his painting technique are among the key topics this volume explores.
