Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) created landscapes whose vast skies and distant horizons make palpable the endlessness of space and time. With an exceptionally subtle painterly approach, he composed images of longing that remain a source of fascination even today. Now regarded as Germany's most important Romantic painter, Friedrich was largely forgotten following his death.
