This book has been written by experts in astacology and covers a range of aspects of the biology and ecology of freshwater crayfish across their range. With a strong focus on wild crayfish throughout the book, it initially examines the taxonomy and genetics of this interesting group of animals, setting the scene for the remainder of the book. Crayfish growth and reproduction, important components of maintaining healthy populations, is described in detail with a number of illustrations to emphasize this aspect.
The next two subsequent chapters cover the behavior and chemical ecology of crayfish. A full systematic review of the diseases of crayfish follows, covering all known pathogens and parasites of farmed and wild crayfish. Tying together the various aspects of crayfish biology and ecology, the next chapter successfully integrates these into a holistic understanding of drivers for crayfish population success.
A unique selling point for the book is the next two chapters, which provide a road map for field- and laboratory-based studies. No book on crayfish would be complete without mention of methods for the control on nonnative crayfish that is ably covered in the final chapter.
