Latter-day Saints living today revere the pioneer days of the Utah Territory. Young Mormons are inundated with stories of how their faithful ancestors crossed the plains in wagons and hand carts seeking religious freedom in Zion. Brigham Young had created a theocratic police state with the sole intention of enriching himself and his henchmen.
Plebeian men were forced to work for slave wages in public works projects while their daughters were coerced into wedding whichever despicable bishop or stake president fancied them. Moreover, escape was impossible because Brigham's destroying angels would cut down any who tried to leave. In the third and final installment of Betsy's adventures, she accidentally goes through another time portal, bringing her great-great-great-great niece, Beth Kim, and a delinquent friend, Howie D'Amato, with her.
Landing in the fall of 1856-in Brigham City-the trio's circumstances couldn't have been worse.
