The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884), was a provocative and profoundly influential critique of the Victorian nuclear family. Engels argued that the traditional monogamous household was in fact a recent construct, closely bound up with capitalist societies. Under this patriarchal system, women were servants and, effectively, prostitutes. Only Communism would herald the dawn of communal living and a new sexual freedom and, in turn, the role of the state would become superfluous.

Biographie de Friedrich Engels

FRIEDRICH ENGELS?was a German philosopher, ?economist, historian, ?political theorist and?revolutionary socialist. He was also a businessman, journalist and political activist. Engels developed what is now known as?Marxism?together with?Karl Marx. In 1845, he published?The Condition of the Working Class in England, based on personal observations and research in English cities. In 1848, Engels co-authored?The Communist Manifesto?with Marx and also authored and co-authored many other works.
After Marx's death, Engels edited the second and third volumes of?Das Kapital.?He died in 1895.
