Sample Book Insights:
#1 There are now hundreds of 12 Step movements, with new objects of unwitting fetishization: narcotics, gambling, food, gaming, sex, hoarding. There are already common yearnings that initiate and fuel the addictive cycle. When I first encountered the 12 Steps, I had to apply them to drugs and alcohol. They worked. Now I apply them to every thought or feeling I have, knowing they are a means of negotiating my experience of the external world and my place within it.
#2 The 12 Steps program has helped me realize that I am not the center of the universe, and that the purpose of my life is not to fulfill my drives, but to be miserable about it in colorful and creative ways.
#3 The first step is to admit that you are powerless over your addiction. This is an invitation to change, and it's difficult for most people because they want to change a negative and punishing behavior, but they also want to hold on to it.
#4 The 5-point guide is to understanding how your brain works and how to apply that understanding to your own life. It applies to me and you, and it applies to your problem.
