Each book has a stand-alone love story featuring wolf-shifters of the Greenwood shifter clan and vampires of the Crimson Circle, an organisation of elite vampire warriors sworn to protect the two-natured: vampires, shifters and sentients. In this first book we meet Charlotte Thornton, a human lawyer whose family doesn't tolerate the two-natured kind, and Raphael Green, a wolf-shifter who has sworn not to date humans.
