Horses, wagons, guns, trains, steamboats, cotton farming, hog raising, sawmills, timber, home remedies, lynchings, gunfights, hangings, and poker games: The story has all of these elements. It shows the development of the railroad and timber industries, and the cultural conditions of the times.
The book is based on real events, with some fictionalization to fill in the gaps.
