Can one good deed change everything? Weeks away from being ordained as a rabbi, Ben Belasco turns away from his life's path and becomes a magician. He spends the next year performing in modest clubs and casinos having no real home nor wanting one. On a rainy night, Ben finds himself stranded in upstate New York with no money and no job. Mabel Preston stops at the casino on her way home from a buying trip to the Finger Lakes Flea and Pea. Overhearing Ben being dismissed, she offers him a place to stay-a cottage on a lake. Ben says yes. When Mabel asks Ben to stand in for the missing Methodist minister of the small Birch Lake church, and wanting to return the favor, he says yes. He couldn't repair the world, but maybe he could help this one small town...
