In a future where AIs do most of the work and environmental thinking transcends everything the favorite past-time is to connect one's brain directly to the virtual net to live through the recorded experiences of others, colloquial called riding. When people start dying while riding in brutal, mysterious ways the police turns to their secret weapon, freelance investigator Sam Cooper, not knowing that they stumbled over a secret that threatens to end humanity as we know it.
