Metaphysics in Evolution: An Exploration of Human ThoughtThroughout human history, metaphysics-the discipline of philosophy that investigates the underlying basis of reality-has had an amazing transformation. From its early beginnings in the questions of the Greek philosophers to its more recent applications in the fields of quantum physics and speculative philosophy, metaphysics has always been flexible enough to change with the times and accommodate new ways of looking at the world. Many metaphysical theories that sought to explain the essence of reality and the mysteries of existence have come and gone during this intellectual journey.
Understanding the development of metaphysics entails delving into the core of human curiosity, thought experimentation, and our never-ending search for knowledge. The ancient Greek philosopher Thales, who is frequently regarded as the first philosopher, is credited with creating metaphysics. By attempting to determine the essential nature of the universe, Thales established the foundation for metaphysical investigations.
However, Aristotle is credited with creating the term "metaphysics" in his writings to describe philosophical inquiries that transcend the material world. Aristotle covered a wide range of subjects in his metaphysics, such as existence itself, essence, causality, and being. Metaphysics and theology grew entwined during the Middle Ages, especially in the writings of theologians such as St. Augustine and St.
Thomas Aquinas. As metaphysics evolved into a tool for examining the nature of God, the soul, and the link between the material and immaterial domains, the emphasis shifted towards reconciling faith and reason.
