His wife's fading interest in sex causes Francisco to admire and long for the young woman. Tragedy strikes when Amapola's mother dies - though Francisco finds Amapola terribly attractive, he is a moral man and will not touch her. Maria finds her sexuality being tested while at the sanitarium where her sister was being treated. Slipping away from town under false pretenses, she relishes a wild impulsive fling with a sexually demanding doctor.
Returning home, Maria is in a tragic bus crash causing her to fall into a deep coma. Francisco, though still in love with his Maria, and still infatuated with Amapola, turns to Amelia a sophisticated woman at the height of her sexuality - though stuck in a marriage to a retired army General. Their affair is animalistic and earthy for Amelia is in control - until Amapola comes to terms with her own sexuality and seduces Francisco.
He finds himself torn between his deep love for Maria, the animal magnetism of Amelia, and the sweet coming of age of Amapola. His conflict is resolved when his wife emerges from her coma, her sex-drive highly active and at first not knowing who Francisco is, passionately seduces him. The very act of making love to him further stimulates her back to reality and their deep love returns Maria to the special woman that he had first married.
