Sadie Simpson thought the tragic loss of her boyfriend right as she started college was enough to send her over the edge. That is, until she lost both of her parents a year later. Alone and trying to figure out her place in the world, she moves to the safest place she can think of, her family's cottage on the East Coast. Determined to start a new life and finish college, Sadie resolves that she needs to try to open up her heart again, despite the gripping fear that surrounds her. Jake Dunn is all alone, and he likes it that way. No one can hurt him, and he can try to just forget the bomb that was dropped on him. After what he's been through, he's closed himself off to everyone. When a chance encounter puts Jake in Sadie's path, she can't help but wonder about him. He's everything she knows she should stay away from, but there's something about him she wants to know more about. Can the elusive, isolated man that is trying to protect himself against further pain help the broken woman who has lost everything? Are some things not meant to be fixed, or can an unplanned meeting show them both that there's something more out there?
