Mollie is a feisty young woman who lives and works in a Victorian lodging house in London. Although her life is hard, she is happy with her lot, until she meets Edwin Hill. Edwin Is a wealthy man who enjoys the benefits of an extravagant lifestyle. However, that is put in jeopardy, when he falls in love with Mollie Carter, for she lacks the social skills needed to survive in his world. Made worse by the fact that she is 'common' and cannot hold her tongue in public.
As their relationship develops, Mollie tries to fit in, but her plight is made worse, when Pearl arrives on the scene; for she is everything Mollie aspires to be. Then, when Mollie becomes a subject of ridicule, and adopts an orphan child, and starts to lose the respect of her husband, will it be Mr Thomas she turns to, or Edwin's friend, John Gunner.
