About half of the immigrants who came to the American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were indentured. This practice carried on well into the nineteenth century in a smaller scale. The term "indentured servant" is just another way of saying you signed a paper agreeing to work without wages for a given number of years to pay for your passage to the New World. It was a heavy price to pay, but it was the only way the landless people of Europe's feudal system could get to America where they had a chance to be free from serfdom and have land of their own.
Under dire circumstances, Egan Fleming signed that piece of paper when he was only fifteen years old, and this is his story.
