Some Christmas Reading on Thai lifestyle and social culture by MattOwensRees. Quite a selection from four of my most popular books.  Over 35, 000 words in total . The Death of a Thai Godfather is a novel which you may find is a remarkable resemblance to the truth in parts. The Extracts from A Thailand Diary come from the 365 true entries of A Thailand Diary drawn from real life events and experiences.
Although names have been changed, the characters are those I have met in my everyday life. The Thai Smile examines, sometimes in a humourous way, the different types of Thai Smile. Smiles don't necessarily mean people are happy, as they would in the West. You will see smiles at funerals, you will see smiles when people are angry or sad. It takes some getting used to. It is taken from one of the 10 chapters of Thailand Take TwoA New Life in Thailand describes an expat's emigration to Thailand after a bitter divirce in the UK and having "met" a Thai teacher on an internet dating site.
It's taken from Escape to Thailand. There are twists and turns right up to the end. You can judge for yourself whether he fitted into Thailand or not. One moment Derek is convinced he's made the right choice, another day he's totally happy and contented. New cultures can have strange effects on Westerners. His friends here try to help him. Sometimes he listens, sometimes he believes he knows everything there is to know about Thais and Thailand.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Matt Owens Rees

My focus group took time to develop but is now paying dividends. I can bounce ideas off Thais from varying social classes. From poor farmers and construction workers to those working in offices and shops. From bankers to well-off business owners. The group includes members of the so-called hi-so elite as well as military and police officers. Interaction sometimes needs to be one-to-one as Thais are cautious expressing their views in front of their other countrymen. To understand Thailand and to integrate better with the Thai people and their culture, it's important to observe and listen rather than doing all the talking oneself.
After all, God gave us two eyes and two ears but only ONE mouth. Through field research and discussions with Thais, either in normal conversation or in the lecture theatre, Matt presents a rich picture of the real Thailand, warts and all. He has written extensively on Thais and Thailand with 20 published books already available in ebook and print format. Despite not being similar in style, his books reflect on some of the observations in "Mai Pen Rai Means Never Mind." ln his opinion, the best introductory book on Thais and Thailand.
Written by Carol Hollinger in 1965, its insights are still very revealing and up to date. Sadly, Hollinger passed away at 45 years old before she could see her best- selling book in print. Matt also then lost an opportunity to collaborate with her on a new book on the concept of Face in Thailand.
