Coburn joined the Union Army, although he and his parents were living on a small farm just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. When the war was over he boarded a train for home, not knowing that the farm had been destroyed and his parents killed. On the train he met a young lady who was also headed to Atlanta. They talked all the way there and by the time they arrived he was smitten. After listening to the lies of others her father told him not to come around anymore, forcing them to meet on the sly.
When she is found dead at their secret meeting place Coburn must flee town or be lynched by the same people he suspects of killing his parents and burning their farm.
