John Suthers' memoir offers the reader his personal story with an insightful account of a public service career that balances what is right and what is necessary. Born out of wedlock and adopted as an infant, he lost his adoptive parents at a young age. The trauma of his father's untimely death caused him, as a teenager, to resolve to live a life of purpose and consequence-to become a good ancestor. After attending Notre Dame and the University of Colorado Law School on scholarships, Suthers embarked on a legal career that took him from the local courthouse to the U. S. Supreme Court. He completed the "legal trifecta, " serving as district attorney, U. S. attorney, and state attorney general. He was involved in captivating criminal cases, historic civil cases, and in waging the war on terrorism after 9/11. Starting in May 2015, Suthers served as the mayor of his hometown of Colorado Springs, leading it through a period of unprecedented prosperity, while overcoming challenges ranging from domestic terrorism to a global pandemic. Having encountered many interesting people along the way, John hopes his life story will help inspire others to make it their goal to become a good ancestor.
